In this publication,
I would like to show a mobile application that serves to make measurements as
if we had a rule in the camera.
How does the
application work? AR Mesure tries to determine the distances between different
points of the object that we want to calculate. This way we can measure
anything through the camera of our smartphone, so eassy.
We only need to
focus our camera at the starting point of the object we want to measure, then
we go away until we reach the other end, so the application will calculate the
measurement, as if we were talking about a rule.
This application we
can take perfectly to class and use it with children so, for them, it will be
much more interesting and it will be more meaningful learning to do with it.
To make some dynamics
in class, we could ask the older children, 5th or 6th grade to bring their own
mobile phones to class with this downloaded application. Then we would divide
them in pairs or trios to solve problems or perform a gymkhana with them
solving riddles in real life, such as: in what space of the class could we fit
a closet 156 cm wide, 38 cm deep and 234 cm tall? Or, if we put all the
tables in a row, how much would the entire row measure?
Currently, as
reported by Digital Trends Español, the application is in development and the
measurements made are not exact. Although it is only millimeters, but it is
enough error to not be able to put a piece of furniture somewhere in the house.
Personally, I find
it a very good tool to use it in class, it can be used by older children
individually and the youngest ones with the help of the teacher and with
simpler examples.
