Statistics is the
science that uses numerical data sets to obtain, based on them, inferences
based on the calculation of probabilities.
To work on this
abstract concept with primary school children, I think it is necessary to
involve them in some way in a project, so I would make statistics about
subjects close to them and in such a way that they want to discover the data
they should find out.
To do this, I
propose in this case a group project that can be done in a class from the
fourth grade.
After a clear
explanation and many examples with the children, we can divide the class into
small groups of 4 or 5 children and ask them to carry out a statistical
investigation of a trade or even some topic related to the school such as the
library, the dining room , etc.
This idea is
inspired by this image that I found in which appears a statistical work about a
Hotel with children in the fourth grade. In the project they investigate
tourists for each month, fashion, income, the average ... and it can give useful
information to the hotel, making their work much more important and they can feel
completely involved in it, as they can feel that his work is good for something
and not simply to keep it in his notebooks after class.
Maybe we could leave
each group the freedom to choose what they want to do the project for and to
whom they will help with it, giving some examples like the ones I mentioned
earlier: knowing the children who are in the dining room, what months there are
more children, how many are missing, how many allergens are there, how many
expenses does it produce, etc.
It seems to me a
very complete and useful project that is also motivating and useful for
children, involving groups in society and being able to provide help about what
they know.
